A Stevens Thanksgiving Meme

I wasn’t tagged to participate in this Thanksgiving Meme but that’s OK. I know that this particular blogger (A Walk Through the Valley) won’t mind.

I’m excited for Thanksgiving this year. We are headed over to my Brother-In-Law’s house. We always have fun when were are there and this year will be even more special. We might be going down to the Old Market with all the kids to walk around and see the Christmas Lights, take the kids to the big slides, and then head on over to Delice to warm up before heading home.

They enjoy hosting Thanksgiving and we enjoy hosting Christmas so that’s what we are doing this year. I’m not sure what my husband will make (he loves to cook) but tonight I will be making a Greek Spanikopita, some home made cranberry sauce, and something else.. I’m just not sure what yet. So on to the Thanksgiving Meme!

1. Which do you like better: hosting Thanksgiving at your home or going elsewhere?

I don’t mind hosting and I don’t mind going somewhere else too. I think it’s always fun either way.

2. Do you buy a fresh or frozen turkey? Organic? Free-range?

When we buy Turkey’s we purchase them frozen ahead of time and go through the defrosting process.

3. Do you make stuffing or dressing? What kind?

I like to make the stuffing that my mother always made when I was a kid. It’s a combination of different things including ground meat, raisins, nuts, and I think rice cooked in Turkey brother. It tastes SO good! (I don’t think I have all the ingredients but you get the idea.)

4. Sweet potato pie or Pumpkin pie?

If I have to pick between the two I guess I would go with Sweet Potato Pie. My husband’s favorite is Pumpkin Pie. My all time favorite pie is Pecan Pie. I like Apple Pie too but with ice cream scooped on top.

5. Are leftovers a blessing or a curse?

Leftovers are ALWAYS a blessing! Food always tastes better the next day. I have no idea why. I think it might have something to do with the flavors being stored up in the fridge over night to mesh together. Yum!

6. What side dishes are a must-have in your family?

The usual items are side dishes in our family. Butter Horn rolls are a must for sure and every since I married into the family it’s been Spanikopita always too. They LOVE it! My SIL Kim makes a fantastic cranberry bread that I hope she has at her house but I won’t mention it to her because I know they have a lot of food to take care of. (I think she will have it though.)

7. What do you wish you had that might make Thanksgiving easier?

SNOW! It’s beautiful when everybody is together OR cooking in the kitchen to see snow flurries outside. It’s just another reminder that the Holidays are here! I LOVE SNOW around Thanksgiving and Christmas.. just not a lot of it. Maybe just enough for the kids to do snow angels.

8. If/when you go to someone else’s house for the holiday, do you usually bring a dish?

Yes, the Spanikopita and the fresh Cranberry Sauce. I don’t like it from a can OR jar. I like the taste of fresh cranberries in my mouth with a bit of turkey, gravy, and mashed potatoes. Oh it’s so good like that!

9. What do you wish one of your guests would bring to your house?

I like it when my guests bring a bottle of wine OR champagne with them. I also like it when they bring something new that nobody has yet to try. It makes the meal exciting and new mixed with all the tasty and all time favorites.

10. What do you wish one of your guests would NOT bring to your house?

The Flu or Strep Throat.

11. Do you stick with a particular menu from year to year or do you mix it up?

We are traditional but we also like to add and mix it up too.

12. Is Thanksgiving a religious or secular holiday in your home?

In our house it’s a time to be together, show our love and appreciation for one another, enjoy one another’s company, watch the kids have fun, and yes.. we pray and Give Thanks to God for everything that we have because ultimately it’s He who has blessed us immensely.

13. Share one Thanksgiving tradition.

The tradition of going down town to the Old Market later on that night started when my best Friend Faithe started coming and celebrating Thanksgiving with us. While her family won’t be with us this year, it’s a tradition I would like to try and keep going. Last Thanksgiving her and I went and got a tattoo. While that is not something I plan on doing every year, it is something I will always think of around this special time.

14. Share one Thanksgiving memory.

I will never forget the time when Faithe was first married to Kelly that we shared in their first Thanksgiving as a married couple. Faithe cooked a beautiful Turkey and boy was it delicious! Then we discovered the bag of giblets inside. Now THAT is a Thanksgiving I will NEVER forget! lol

15. Name five things you’re thankful for.

I am Thankful for The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit (that counts as one), I am Thankful for my Family (all of them), I am Thankful for my friends whom I have loved over the years who have stayed true to the real meaning of what friendship is, I am Thankful for the bad times because it has reminded me how lucky and blessed that I am, and I am Thankful for Today.

*Around the Holidays when I start to get Christmas Cards in the mail, I like to scan and include them with my posts. This Holiday Card was sent to me via the Omaha World Herald. I used to subscribe to their newspaper but not so much any more. Keep your eyes peeled on all of my blogs for thos Holiday cards. I will post them in the order that I recieve them Before I tape them to my kitchen cabinets and on the backs of all the doors and trim through the house! (That’s one thing that we do when we decorate for the Holidays.)

@Becki – I figured you forgot to tag somebody because I was looking pretty hard to see if you had tagged anybody. lol

Well.. we didn’t have sick people on Thanksgiving Day and we seemed to get through Black Friday alright and then it happened.. Miss Fiona was up at 1 am throwing up. Then again at 2 am and then again at 4 am. So we are staying home today to make sure she gets through this little 24 hour bug.

I’m thinking it’s a bug because she had no fever whatsoever.
